I Kings 12 – 14 and Incredible!

I Kings 12 – 14

Today’s lesson makes it clear that it really matters whose advice we take. Solomon has died and his son Rehoboam goes to Shechem where the people were gathered to make him king. He had the kingdom within reach, but listened to the wrong people and lost the support of ten of the tribes of Israel. He ruled over only Judah and Benjamin.

Jeroboam became the ruler over the other ten tribes just as God had told him through the prophet Ahijah. He was not a man of God as is evidenced by his creation of two golden calves that he set up as a place to offer sacrifices. After the altar split into two pieces at Bethel and his hand became paralyzed, you would think Jeroboam would have reconsidered his pagan practices, but he did not. In fact, the Lord uses the prophet Ahijah to tell Jeroboam what is about to happen.

Of course, Rehoboam wasn’t any better and, during his reign, King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem and stole everything, including the gold shields Solomon had made. When Rehoboam died, his son Abijam becomes king of Judah (and Benjamin).

Tomorrow, it’s II Chronicles 10 - 12.

Incredible!

Obama Wants Your Wedding/Birthday/Anniversary Presents

The President's campaign sent out an email on Friday that is generating a lot of material for comedians and late-night television hosts. The mass mailing actually suggested that people who are getting married (or are about to celebrate an anniversary or birthday) should escew gifts and ask their friends and family to instead donate to Obama's re-election campaign. See the invitation HERE.
