Matthew 19 and Mark 10 and Lunch with Pam

Matthew 19 and Mark 10

I think the truth that stood out to me from today’s reading was stated in Mark 10”27: “Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”

When it comes right down to it, we humans are basically helpless. We are at the mercy of a number of things: germs, disease, other humans, and so on. But God is all-powerful. He is the Creator of the universe. The sun, moon, and stars obey him. We’ve seen Jesus turn water into wine, calm the sea, eliminate disease, and heal the sick.

Isn’t it wonderful that we can seek God and ask his help? He urges us in Matthew 7:7, 8 “Keep on asking and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Tomorrow, we’ll read Matthew 20 – 21.

Lunch with Pam

Today, I drove to Bartow and had lunch with a dear friend of mine whom I used to work with at Rehabilicare. We had a great time. Pam is one of those friends that when you see her, you can talk as if it hasn’t been 5 years since you’ve seen her.

Luke 17:11 – 18:14

Do you think the nine lepers who failed to come back to Jesus had only a temporary remission from their leprosy? Jesus asked the one who returned about where the other nine who had been healed were. Did you notice that the one who returned praising God was a Samaritan? Jesus told him to stand up and go, that his faith had healed him, yet he had already done that.

It should give us pause to realize that there will be no visible signs for when Jesus returns. Jesus uses two examples. In Noah’s time, everything was happening as usual until the day the rains came down. He also talks about Lot and how the people of Sodom & Gomorrah continued with their daily business until the burning sulfur started falling. We need to be constantly living as if the Lord is coming back at any second.

I don’t think I have ever been so impressed with the importance of persistent prayer as I have since we began reading the gospels and Jesus’s examples about why we should be persistence. Are you wearing out God with your persistent prayer? Is there a loved one you have been persistently praying for? Is there a situation that needs to be resolved? Pray persistently. Pray often. Cry out to God. As He says, “So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

Tomorrow, we’ll read Matthew 19 and Mark 10.

Until next time…

John 11 and Some More on the Move

John 11

This chapter is one of my favorites in the book of John, actually in the whole Bible. By this time, Jesus had brought people back to life. Lazarus was different. He was a friend, the brother of Mary and Martha. Lazarus became sick. Mary and Martha must have seen Jesus heal the sick countless times. That they sent for Jesus, telling him their brother was sick, was no surprise. What was a surprise was that Jesus delayed coming to see his friend even though the Scriptures are clear that “Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus.” He waited two full days and headed for Judea.

Now, this was a dangerous thing to do, because a few days before, the people in Judea were trying to stone him. But he knew Lazarus had died. In fact, by the time they arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been in the grave for four days.

A lot of mourners were there when Jesus and the disciples arrived. They had come to console the sisters over the death of their brother.

When Martha heard Jesus was coming, she ran to meet him. Mary stayed at home. Martha showed a lot of faith when she told Jesus that if he had been there Lazarus would not have died. Then she said, “But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”

Martha obviously believed in the resurrection on the last day. Jesus tells here he is the resurrection and the life, that anyone who believes in him will live, “even after dying.”

Martha knows Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. She goes to get Mary and they go to Lazarus’ grave, where Jesus is. Mary says the same thing Martha did, “Lord if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Did you ever wonder what God thinks or how he feels when he sees one of his children weeping? In this case, “a deep anger wells up within Jesus and he was deeply troubled.” He asks where Lazarus was buried and they tell him.

“Then Jesus wept.”

When Jesus has them roll the stone away from the tomb, he is still angry. Martha tries to stop them rolling away the stone saying that by now the smell will be terrible.

You know the rest. They roll the stone away and Jesus thanks the Father for hearing him. He shouts for Lazarus to come out and Lazarus comes forth, hands and feet bound in graveclothes.

Why do you suppose Jesus was angry?

We aren’t told what went on between Lazarus and Jesus and Mary and Martha. It must have been a wonderful time of celebration with lots of hugging and smiling and crying for joy.

Not so for the priests and Pharisees, though. They were determined to kill Jesus and started to seriously plot his death.

Tomorrow, we’ll read Luke 17:11 – 18:14.

Some More on the Move

Today, my house became a little more settled. My cousin Richard gave me a bookcase, which happened to be the first one Mark and I ever bought together. He also gave me a chest of drawers, which happened to previously belong to my mother. It’s an almost perfect match to the dresser my niece and her husband gave me. Richard also gave me a brown sofa consisting of two recliners.  Once again, I feel so blessed to have such wonderful friends and family. To top off the day, I got a box with Ida Red apples and Wegman’s cheddar cheese from my brother-in-law Don and sister-in-law Rose.

Oh, I put my camper on craigslist and already had an email about it.

It’s pretty late so I’d better get to bed. I’ve got to go to the chiropractor tomorrow morning.

Until next time…

Luke 16 – 17:10 and Obama’s Czars

Luke 16 – 17:10

There are a few verses that stand out in today’s reading:

· Luke 16:9 “Here’s the lesson: Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. Then, when your earthly possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home.”

· Lukw 16:13 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

· Luke 16:18 “For example, a man who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery. And anyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.”

· Luke 16:31 “But Abraham said, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t listen even if someone rises from the dead.’”

· Luke 17:10 “In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’”

Did any of these verses speak to you? Are there verses I haven’t cited that meant something to you?

Tomorrow, we’ll read John 11.

Luke 14 – 15

Don’t you just love the story of the prodigal son? The father divided his wealth between his two sons. The younger took his, moved away, and wasted it. He finally got so desperate that he worked for a farmer feeding pigs. Pigs are unclean animals for Jews, but this guy got so hungry he wanted to eat the pods he was feeding the pigs.

But, by God’s grace, he came to his senses. Wasn't that his problem all along? He lacked sense. He finally realized that he could ask his father’s forgiveness and ask him to take him as a hired servant.

His father must have spent some time looking for him to come home, because he saw his son when he was still afar off. I love the words Jesus used to describe how the father felt: “filled with love and compassion.” And what the father did: he embraced him and kissed him, he treated him like the son he was instead of like a servant, and he gave him the finest robe in the house. He called for a celebration, saying, “For this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.”

You know that is how God looks at us – with love and compassion. He is ready and eager to forgive us and bring us back to life, if we will turn to him and repent of our sins. He will give us new life and treat us as his son. Praise God!

Tomorrow, we’ll read Luke 16 – 17:10.

Until next time…

Luke 12 – 13

Luke 12 – 13

A couple of things that stood out for me in this reading are:

Luke 12:7 – And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.

Luke 12:15 -- …Life is not measured by how much you own.

Luke 12:21 – Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.

Tomorrow, we’ll read Luke 14 – 15.

This morning I went to the chiropractor and felt so great after leaving there. All of my stuff has been moved from my camper except for the stuff in the refrigerator and some stuff in the bathroom. My friend John moved everything that was left. What a great worker.

My niece Jane and her husband David brought me a set of box springs, a mattress a mirrored dresser and a night table. Such great people.

I am so blessed to have such a great family and so many great friends.

I can’t believe how much was stored in my camper. I’m going to have to get a couple of more bookcases so I can store the food I have no room for in my kitchen cupboards.

Today I bought a microwave cabinet – it’s really a little island – I can put the microwave oven on top and my other electrical stuff in the cabinet and use the fold-out shelf when I need to use it.

Tomorrow, I’m taking a break and going to the movies. I’ll probably see Alex Cross.

Until next time…

Luke 10 – 11 and John 10:22-42

Luke 10 – 11 and John 10:22-42

We hear a lot about the 12 disciples, but not so much about the 72 that Jesus sent out in pairs “as lambs among wolves.” And they were successful according to Luke 10:17. They reported to Jesus joyfully and spoke of demons obeying when they used Jesus’ name. Jesus warns them not to rejoice because the evil spirits obey them, but because their names are registered in heaven.

Tomorrow, we’ll read Luke 12 – 13.

Today was another busy day. Up at 4:30 am, I started my day doing laundry and reorganizing the stuff in my cabinets. I expect I’ll be moving almost everything around more than once. I opened my new microwave and tested it by heating up the pad I use for my back. It worked great. The last bit of laundry is in the dryer. I also went to Plant City with my cousin and got a set of bed rails for my queen-sized bed. I brought a few more things over from my camper and will hopefully get the rest moved tomorrow.

Until next time…

John 9:1 - 10:22-42 and More On Moving

John 9:1 - 10:22-42

Today’s reading should put to rest any ideas that people become ill because of sin. Jesus says that the blind beggar was blind so the power of God be seen in him.

And, were the Pharisees happy the man had been healed? Did they see this as the action of a compassionate Jesus? Did they praise God for the healing? No, they complained that Jesus had been working on the Sabbath. When the Pharisees tried to convince the healed blind man that Jesus was a sinner, the blind man said some pretty profound words: “I don’t know whether he is a sinner, … But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see.”

He got a little short with the Pharisees when they pressed him: “We know that God doesn’t listen to sinnersk, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will. Ever since the world began, no on has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind. If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.”

Tomorrow, we’ll read Luke 10 – 11 and John 10:22-42.

More On Moving

Today, after a visit to Dr. Tom, I stopped at WalMart and bought a desk for doing my leatherwork and a bookcase for my leather supplies. I also got some laundry detergent and washed a couple of loads of laundry. After that, Richard and I went to breakfast at Bob Evans, then to Ace Hardware, then to Office Depot. At Ace, I brought a shower massage and at Office Depot, I bought two office chairs (one for the compter and one for my leather work) and a computer desk.  This afternoon I packed up some more stuff from my RV and my friend John loaded it and unloaded it. It weighed a ton. Richard and I unloaded all of the previously moved stuff. Most of what we brought over today won’t have to be unpacked until later.

Tomorrow, I expect to get the rest of what’s in the camper packed and will move it on Friday.

Looking forward to when this is all over so life can get back to normal, whatever that is.

Until next time…

John 7 – 8 and Moving

John 7 - 8

Moved today (10/23/2012) so no comments. Wiped out completely.

Tomorrow, we’ll read John 9:1 - 10:22-42.

Moving

Today, I moved about  1/2 of my stuff in my camper. I’ll probably spend tomorrow taking care of what we moved – mostly food.—and move the rest on Thursday.

Richard and I went to Bed Bath & Beyond to look for a microwave, but they only had one and it wasn’t what I wanted. We went to Target and found the same thing. We decided to go to Top China Buffet for dinner, but stopped at K-Mart which is the same plaza. They had a huge selection so I bought one.

Tomorrow, on my way back from the chiropractor, I’m going to stop at a convenient WalMart to see if they have any kind of workbench & chair I can use for my leatherwork. After that, I don’t need much of anything else – I may get a bookcase or two.

Until next time…

Matthew 18

Whenever I read the parable of the good shepherd who will go out to search for the one that is lost, I think of my good friend from high school who used to do beautiful chalk drawings. The best ne she ever did was of the shepherd finding the lost sheep. She drew this while I sang (I know it’s hard to believe) The Ninety and Nine (Lyrics by Elizabeth C. Clephane, 1868 and music by Ira D. Dankey):

There were ninety and nine that safely lay
In the shelter of the fold.
But one was out on the hills away,
Far off from the gates of gold.
Away on the mountains wild and bare.
Away from the tender Shepherd’s care.
Away from the tender Shepherd’s care.

“Lord, Thou hast here Thy ninety and nine;
Are they not enough for Thee?”
But the Shepherd made answer: “This of Mine
Has wandered away from Me;
And although the road be rough and steep,
I go to the desert to find My sheep,
I go to the desert to find My sheep.”

But none of the ransomed ever knew
How deep were the waters crossed;
Nor how dark was the night the Lord passed through
Ere He found His sheep that was lost.
Out in the desert He heard its cry,
Sick and helpless and ready to die;
Sick and helpless and ready to die.

“Lord, whence are those blood drops all the way
That mark out the mountain’s track?”
“They were shed for one who had gone astray
Ere the Shepherd could bring him back.”
“Lord, whence are Thy hands so rent and torn?”
“They are pierced tonight by many a thorn;
They are pierced tonight by many a thorn.”

And all through the mountains, thunder riven
And up from the rocky steep,
There arose a glad cry to the gate of Heaven,
“Rejoice! I have found My sheep!”
And the angels echoed around the throne,
“Rejoice, for the Lord brings back His own!
Rejoice, for the Lord brings back His own!”

Considering the call to forty days of prayer for our nation, aren’t you encouraged by the words of Jesus: “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” Pray for the third great awakening to come to our nation.

Tomorrow, we’ll read John 7 - 8.

Until next time…

Matthew 17, Mark 9. and Luke 9:28-62, Some Pictures and Mark’s Birthday

Matthew 17, Mark 9. and Luke 9:28-62

Do you remember how Moses had to cover his face with a veil whenever he left the Tabernacle where the presence of the Lord dwelt? It started when Moses came down from Mt Sinai with the two stone tablets “inscribed with the terms of he covenant.” The glory of the Lord that was on Moses’ face scared the people.

When Jesus took Peter, James, and John up on a high mountain away from everyone else, they saw Jesus’ appearance change/transform so his face shone like the sun. Unlike Moses, Jesus’ clothes became as white as light. In addition, they saw Moses and Elijah appear and begin talking with Jesus. Nothing is recorded about how they knew who the two men were nor is it recorded what Jesus, Moses, and Elijah discussed.

You can tell how excited Peter was and how happy he was to be there. As he was suggesting he would make 3 shelters as memorials, they all heard a voice from a bright cloud overshadowing them. The message was much like that heard when John the Baptist baptized Jesus: “This is my dearly beloved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.” I would have fainted dead away. As for the disciples, they were terrified and fell face down on the ground.

Don’t you love Jesus’ response? He knew they were scared and didn’t just tell them not to be afraid, he touched them. It doesn’t say so, but I think they were immediately comforted. Reminds me of that well-known Gaither song called “He Touched Me.”

Have you ever felt the touch of Jesus when you were scared or hurting or confused about what to do?

Tomorrow, we’ll read Matthew 18.

Some Pictures

On Monday or Tuesday of this week, I’ll be closing on a new residence. It’s kiddy-corner across from my cousin Richard’s house. Although it doesn’t look it, it has three bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a washer and dryer, a sun-room, and an attached shed.

Matthew 16, Mark 8. and Luke 9:18-27, Civil War is Coming and Bill Cosby Is Tired

Matthew 16, Mark 8. and Luke 9:18-27

When I hear the phrase “signs of the times,” I automatically think of the end times, but when Jesus spoke about the “signs of the times” in Matthew 16, he was referring to the signs that he was the Messiah.

Daniel 9:25 foretold when the Messiah would come: “Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times.” This is interpreted by many Biblical scholars to refer to 490 years (from Cyrus’ command to rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah comes.

There were other signs that Jesus was the Messiah, including the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 35:5-6 – “And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf. The lame will leap like a deer and those who cannot speak will sing for joy.”

In any case, Jesus told them the only sign he would give was the sign of the prophet Jonah. If you recall, Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for 3 days and 3 nights.

Did you ever wonder why painters and artists portray Peter standing at the “pearly gates?” In Matthew 16:19, Jesus tells Peter he will give him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus didn’t keep it a secret from his disciples that he would suffer and be killed. He also told them that on the third day, he would be raised from the dead. Peter didn’t like Jesus talking about his death and reprimanded him for it, but Jesus corrected Peter. He saw that Satan was using Peter to set a dangerous trap for him. Jesus saw things from God’s point of view, but Peter was looking at things from the human point of view. May we always look at things from God’s point of view.

Tomorrow, we’ll read Matthew 17, Mark 9. and Luke 9:28-62.

Civil War…

WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF THE RIGHTS THAT ARE IN THE PROCESS OF BEING ELIMINATED!!!!!!!

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO PROTECT OUR RIGHTS??????

Civil War is Coming ??????????????????????

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States reversed policy on Wednesday and said it would back launching talks on a treaty to regulate arms sales as long as the talks operated by consensus, a stance critics said gave every nation a veto.
The decision, announced in a statement released by the US. State Department, overturns the position of former President George W Bush's administration, which had opposed such a treaty on the grounds that national controls were better.
On Wednesday Obama Took the First Major Step in a Plan to Ban All Firearms in the United States .
The Obama administration intends to force gun control and a complete ban on all weapons for US citizens through the signing of international treaties with foreign nations. By signing international treaties on gun control, the Obama administration can use the US State Department to bypass the normal legislative process in Congress. Once the US Government signs these international treaties, all US citizens will be subject to those gun laws created by foreign governments. These are laws that have been developed and promoted by organizations such as the United Nations and individuals such as George Soros and Michael Bloomberg. The laws are designed and intended to lead to the complete ban and confiscation of all firearms It will never happen!
The Obama administration is attempting to use tactics and methods of gun control that will inflict major damage to our 2nd Amendment before US citizens even understand what has happened. Obama can appear before the public and tell them that he does not intend to pursue any legislation (in the United States) that will lead to new gun control laws, while cloaked in secrecy, his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is committing the US to international treaties and foreign gun control laws.

Does that mean Obama is telling the truth? What it means is that there will be no publicized gun control debates in the media or votes in Congress. We will wake up one morning and find that the United States has signed a treaty that prohibits firearm and ammunition manufacturers from selling to the public. We will wake up another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that prohibits any transfer of firearm ownership. And then, we will wake up yet another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that requires US citizens to deliver any firearm they own to the local government collection and destruction center or face imprisonment.
This is not a joke nor a false warning. As sure as government health care will be forced on us by the Obama administration through whatever means necessary, so will gun control.

"I'm 83 and I'm Tired"

I'm 83
. Except for brief period in the 50's when I was doing my National
Service, I've worked hard since I was 17. Except for some serious
health challenges, I put in 50-hour weeks, and didn't call in sick in nearly
40 years. I made a reasonable salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my
income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, it looks as
though retirement was a bad idea, and I'm tired. Very tired.

I'm tired
of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who
don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take
the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy
to earn it.

I'm tired
of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I
can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and
daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight
offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't
"believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning
teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the
genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and
Shari'a law tells them to.

I'm tired
of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let
Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries use our oil money to fund mosques
and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in Australia , New Zealand ,
UK, America and Canada , while no one from these countries are allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia or any other
Arab country to teach love and tolerance..

I'm tired
of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global
warming, which no one is allowed to debate.

I'm tired
of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help
support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ
rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses
or stick a needle in their arm while they tried to fight it off?

I'm tired
of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of all
parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful
mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting
caught. I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.

I'm really tired
of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and
actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination
or big-whatever for their problems.
I'm also tired and fed up with seeing young men and women in their teens and early 20's be-deck them selves in tattoos and face studs, thereby making
themselves un-employable and claiming money from the Government.

Yes, I'm damn tired.
But I'm also glad to be 83.. Because, mostly, I'm not
going to have to see the world these people are making. I'm just sorry for
my granddaughter and their children. Thank God I'm on the way out and not
on the way in.

There is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us

sends it on!
This is your chance to make a difference.
