The Help

If you don’t see any other movie this year or if you could only see one movie this year, it would have to be The Help. The book was great; the movie brought the book to life. If the movie and each of the stars are not nominated for an Oscar, there is a problem in Hollywood.

Emma Stone, a versatile and talented actress, does a terrific job playing Skeeter, the white college grad who interviews and writes a book about  “the help.” Her best friend, Hilly Holbrook, (played by Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of actor and director Ron Howard, plays a very believable racist. Not to be outdone, Aibileen (Viola Davis) and Minnie (Octavia Spencer) are the two maids who first talk with Skeeter. Jessica Chastain aces the role of “white trash” Celia Foote.

Skeeter’s mom is played very ably by Allyson Janney. Sissy Spacek, as Hilly’s mom, will probably earn another Oscar nomination – she is just a hoot in this. Leslie Jordan, whom some of you will remember from his role as Terry on the TV show Reba, does a great job as Skeeter’s first boss, too. Cicely Tyson has a cameo role.

Progress

After a restful night’s sleep, I made a lot of progress putting things away this morning, though I still have a ways to go. I haven’t done a thing this afternoon except take a two and one-half hour, much-needed nap. I don’t expect to do much more tonight except fill up my kitchen drawers now that I have dividers that fit.

Well, maybe I’d better get to it.

Until next time…
